Le Papillon Vert Wholesale French Baskets target Independents and Farm Shops

Le Papillon Vert are aiming to grow their wholesale business this summer by offering the French Basket range at great prices to the Independent Retail Trade and Farm Shops.

With an eye on National Markets Week, an original recommendation by Mary Portas to get Britain Back to the High Street, Le Papillon Vert believes the brand is strong enough to take a stronghold in the UK market.

A British company, the brand takes cues from France, where shoppers traditionally take a basket to the market/shop for daily needs.

Owner of Le Papillon Vert, Rebecca Cooke,  says ‘It is now becoming a necessity for people to change their attitude and move away from the expectation that they will be given a plastic shopping bag in every shop – it is simply too much of an impact on the environment. We aim to offer a good-looking alternative, which is both practical and long lasting.’

How are French Market / Moroccan Shopping Baskets made?

Le Papillon Vert sources baskets from all over the world, but the traditional French Market Basket is actually hand woven in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Using dried palm leaves, the weaving (a method of plaiting, with the size of the basket determined in ’rounds’), takes place during the harsher months and is often done by skilled artisan farmers, who use the opportunity to supplement their income during the difficult times of the year when farming is more difficult.

The baskets are then finished with soft leather handles in the cities of Casablanca or Marrakesh.

Looking after your Unlined French Market Basket

All of Le Papillon Vert’s Unlined French Baskets are handmade from natural materials and colour, sizing, weave width and pattern are part of their character – not necessarily flaws. Differences in the weave, stitching and leather are characteristic of these beautifully crafted baskets and make each of them unique.

Basket Care: During transit, or future use, there may be a possibility that the product becomes mis-shapen. Customers are advised to use a house plant spray to gently dampen the basket with clean cold water and re-shape the basket whilst damp. Being made from natural materials, the basket will regain its shape as it dries (ideally in the sun). Please note, if the basket is not completely dry, there is a risk of mildew growth. The leather handles can be cleaned with leather soap if required.

Struggling towns to host National Markets Day this summer

British towns will host a National Markets Day this summer where people can hire stalls for £10 and town centre parking charges could also be slashed under plans to revitalise struggling high streets, the Government has said.

The announcements came following a decision by Grant Shapps, Housing and Local Government Minister, to accept “virtually all” of retail expert Mary Portas’s recommendations into how to save Britain’s failing town centres.

A report last year by Ms Portas, who is a television presenter and a columnist in The Daily Telegraph, found that British high streets had “reached a crisis point” due to years of underinvestment and competition from out-of-town supermarkets and the internet. She warned that high streets were in danger of disappearing “forever”.

Mr Shapps said yesterday: “Mary Portas’s review made crystal clear the stark challenge our high streets face.”

National Markets Day will take place on Saturday June 23 and could become an annual event.

Under the initiative, entrepreneurs, home bakers and local artists in towns across the UK will be leased cheap market stalls – priced at around £10 – to “try out” their business ideas and encourage more people to visit town centres.

How Le Papillon Vert’s French Market / Moroccan Shopping Baskets are made in Morocco…

The basket is one of man’s oldest and most useful art forms. The Ancient Mesopotamians believed that baskets are the children of the gods and the basis of our earth. In fact, all ancient civilizations produced baskets, which they used to gather, store, and dry food. Le Papillon Vert’s unlined French Market Baskets are hand woven in small villages of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, a tradition passed down in private homes from generation to generation.

Each basket takes 3 to 8 hours to weave, depending on size and style. They are hand woven from natural and sustainable materials, including water reeds and date palm leaves, which grow abundantly in the region.

The leather is treated using an all-natural process (either dyed and oiled or painted) in larger cities, such as Casablanca and Marrakech. After the baskets are woven, they are collected so that the leather handles can be riveted for strength and sewn on by hand. Because each basket is hand woven, each is unique.
