Le Papillon Vert has an established reputation for offering slow, artisan made basket bags that have both rustic charm and excellent longevity. Each basket is designed with the traditional French chic style at the forefront, with versatility and strength at the core.We work with Moroccan artisans who pick and dry date palm leaves, make plaits and stitch the basket shapes.

Literally each basket is different and unique. The leather work is done at a small family-owned workshop just outside Marrakesh, and generally local ladies stitch the handles etc., again to supplement income for their households. It is an important and very traditional industry in this region. Le Papillon Vert uses minimal packaging, re-using cardboard boxes whenever we can.

VAT will not be added for exports, however you will be responsible for import duties as required.

Other things to note: We regret that we do not send free nor wholesale priced samples. If you would like to see a particular basket(s), you can order this from our retail site and if you place a subsequent wholesale order, please ask us to refund the price difference. Our baskets are beautifully and carefully handmade, so sizes are approximate and no two baskets will ever be completely consistently sized or have the handles in exactly the same place as per a machine made product (and this is part of their USP and charm). A customer buying one basket would not notice these differences unless they are compared with others, so please bear this in mind when deciding your re-selling strategy/costings Measurements are approximate and can vary quite a lot due to being hand woven (looser weave baskets will be bigger) NB: if you are not logged in, and/or do not have £150 at wholesale prices in your basket, you will only see RETAIL prices! Once £150 is reached at wholesale prices, your basket total will adjust.

The Story of a Basket Bag

Our dedicated teams of artisan makers make our baskets to a specification based on woven ’rounds’. The weaving is done as per the traditional methods handed down by centuries of magical connections. The baskets, we are proud to say, are never factory perfect, and no two baskets are ever exactly the same. Each is unique and has it’s own story.

The weave is a plaited length of sun-dried date palm leaves. This weave is rolled at the bottom, and stitched in rounds to make the shape, then finished in a roll on one side at the top. This gives strength and integrity to the basket.
